Explore Beautiful Central Oregon

Sunriver and the surrounding area is a wonderful year round out door playground.  Below is some information on a few of the things there is to do in Sunriver and Central Oregon.

Take a Stroll in the Park!

Fort Rock Park is only a couple of blocks away. The park has eight of the best tennis courts in Sunriver and lessons are available in the summer months. It also has a basketball court, softball field and a brand new sand volleyball court. In the summer, recreation gear can be checked out at the tennis hut. The little ones will love the playground and the large grassy field. The park also has a number of picnic areas with gas BBQ’s (you can check out propane bottles from the tennis hut) and a large pavilion available for group reservations.

Ride to Your Hearts Content

One thing folks love about Sunriver is the ability to go everywhere on bikes. Sunriver has 33 miles of bike trails, so put away the car and see how relaxing it is to see everything at a walking or biking pace. We provide four cruiser bikes for adults and two smaller bikes for the little ones. (Remember, to bring your helmets – they are required for riders and passengers under 16 years old, and a good idea for all of us.) If you tire of cruising on Sunriver’s paved bike path system, you can take your mountain bike (bring your own, or rent one from the six rental shops in Sunriver) to the miles of trails and roads in the adjacent Deschutes National Forest. A popular shorter trail is the 2 ½ mile trail to the spectacular Benham Falls. Stay on this trail and you can ride all the way to Bend along the Deschutes River.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

Winter is a special time in Sunriver. There are few landscapes more peaceful than snow falling in the forest. In good snow years, you can cross country ski or snowshoe virtually anywhere, including the paths and golf course fairways. The kids will sled for hours at the amphitheater site, or enjoy ice skating at the Village. When the snow is less abundant in Sunriver, it is a short drive to the world famous Mt. Bachelor ski area. Mt. Bachelor has the best snow in Oregon and was one of the first resorts to provide special facilities for boarders. It also has miles of cross country trails and a great tubing area. There are miles of cross-country ski trails and snowmobile trials within a short distance of Sunriver. Sunriver Owners Association provides classes and tours for every possible way of getting around on the snow.

Fun in the Sun!

Summer means lets get in the water. Sunriver has two pools for hours of fun in the sun. Pool and tennis court passes are provided during the summer. But, don’t forget the Deschutes river that flows through Sunriver. The marina has all kinds of boats for rent and rafting companies can provide the white water thrill nearby or on longer excursions. The Cascade Highway takes you to hundreds of lakes within an hours drive with many opportunities for boating and fishing. And for hikers, the Three Sisters Wilderness Area is only twenty miles away and the world-famous Smith Rocks climbing area is also close by. Five miles from Sunriver, you can hike through lava fields, explore a lava tube cave, or visit the award winning High Desert Museum. Closer at home, the Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory is definitely worth a visit. Like golf? Sunriver has the Meadows and Woodlands courses for your enjoyment and there are a dozen more courses within a one-half hour drive of Sunriver.

Great Events for Year Round Good Times!

Central Oregon is also a great place for special happenings. Sunriver’s own Village has something going on every week in the summer and some special events in the winter also. Sunriver is also the home of the Sunriver Music Festival and the Pacific Crest Triathalon as well as numerous golf and tennis tournaments. Further afield, Bend has a festival for every season, the infamous Pole, Peddle, Paddle event, the Cascade Music Festival, the Cascade Bicycle Race, etc. etc.
